Copper Salts Doped Spiro-OMeTAD for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

The development of effective and stable hole transporting materials (HTMs) is very important for achieving high-performance planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, copper salts (cuprous thiocyanate (CuSCN) or cuprous iodide (CuI)) doped 2,2,7,7-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) based on a solution processing as the HTM in PSCs is demonstrated. The incorporation of CuSCN (or CuI) realizes a p-type doping with efficient charge transfer complex, which results in improved film conductivity and hole mobility in spiro-OMeTAD:CuSCN (or CuI) composite films. As a result, the PCE is largely improved from 14.82% to 18.02% due to obvious enhancements in the cell parameters of short-circuit current density and fill factor. Besides the HTM role, the composite film can suppress the film aggregation and crystallization of spiro-OMeTAD films with reduced pinholes and voids, which slows down the perovskite decomposition by avoiding the moisture infiltration to some extent. The finding in this work provides a simple method to improve the efficiency and stability of planar perovskite solar cells.

Six [Tp*WS3Cu2]-based clusters derived from [Et4N][Tp*WS3], Cu(i) salts and phosphine ligands: Syntheses, structures and enhanced third-order NLO properties

Treatment of [Et4N][Tp*WS3] (Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) (1) with CuX (X = Br, SCN) and PPh3 or 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) produced two neutral trinuclear clusters [Tp*W(mu3-S)(mu-S)2Cu 2Br(PPh3)] (2) and [Tp*W(mu3-S)(mu-S) 2Cu2(SCN)(dppm)]2¡¤MeCN¡¤Et 2O (3¡¤MeCN¡¤Et2O). Reactions of 1 with [Cu(MeCN)4]PF6, NH4PF6 and 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), N,N-bi(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-2- aminopyridine (bdppmapy), N,N,N?,N?-tetra(diphenylphosphanylmethyl) ethylenediamine (dppeda), or 1,4-N,N,N?,N?- tetra(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)benzenediamine (dpppda) afforded four clusters containing butterfly-shaped [Tp*WS3Cu2] cores, [Tp*W(mu3-S)(mu-S)2Cu2(dpppds)] (PF6)¡¤1.25MeCN (dpppds = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane disulfide) (4¡¤1.25MeCN), [Tp*W(mu3-S)(mu-S) 2Cu2(bdppmapy)](PF6)¡¤3MeCN (5¡¤3MeCN) and {[Tp*W(mu3-S)(mu-S)2Cu 2]2(L)]}(PF6)2¡¤Sol (6¡¤Et2O: L = dppeda, Sol = Et2O; 7¡¤1.25MeCN: L = dpppda, Sol = 1.25MeCN). Compounds 2-7 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectra, electrospray ion mass spectra (ESI-MS) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 2 or 3 has a butterfly-shaped [Tp*WS 3Cu2] core in which one [Tp*WS3] unit binds two Cu(i) centers via one mu3-S and two mu-S atoms. In the cationic structure of 4 or 5, one in situ-formed dpppds or bdppmapy combines with the [Tp*WS3Cu2] core via each of its two S atoms or two P atoms coordinated at each Cu(i) center. In the bicationic structure of 6 or 7, two [Tp*WS3Cu2] cores are linked by one dppeda or dpppda bridge to form a bicyclic structure. The isolation of 2-7 with unstable [Tp*WS3Cu2] cores may be ascribed to the coordination of P- or S-donor ligands at Cu(i) centers of these cores. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 2-7 in DMF were also investigated by using the femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique at 800 nm.

Thiocyanate hydrometallurgy for the recovery of gold. Part I: Chemical and thermodynamic considerations

Thiocyanate has been identified and studied as a promising alternative lixiviant for gold in acidic solutions. Eh-pH and ion species distribution diagrams for SCN-H2O, Au-SCN-H2O, Ag-SCN-H2O, Cu-SCN-H2O, and Fe-SCN-H2O systems were constructed to predict the behavior of each metal ion in the thiocyanate system and also to explain the experimental results. Thermodynamic analyses suggest that gold can be leached by thiocyanate under appropriate leaching potentials, forming aurous or auric complexes with thiocyanate, depending on the thiocyanate concentration and leaching potential. According to species distribution diagrams, silver (I) and copper (I) form insoluble salts at moderate thiocyanate concentrations and are soluble at low and high thiocyanate concentrations. Ferric ion forms a series of complexes with thiocyanate. The study of the ferric ion effect indicates that gold can be leached in acid thiocyanate solution with ferric sulfate as the oxidant. Also the presence of excess ferric ion reduces the apparent thiocyanate activity for copper (I) and silver (I) dissolution. The findings of this thermodynamic assessment are useful in the analysis of some of the phenomena encountered in the leaching and recovery of gold from thiocyanate solutions as discussed in subsequent papers.

Inorganic-organic hybrid high-dimensional polyoxotantalates and their structural transformations triggered by water

The first two inorganic-organic hybrid three-dimensional (3D) polyoxotantalates (POTas) and the first two inorganic-organic hybrid 2D POTas have been obtained. All of these high-dimensional POTas are built from a new-type POTa dimeric cluster {Cu(en)(Ta6O19)}2/{Cu(enMe)(Ta6O19)}2 (en = ethylenediamine, enMe = 1,2-diaminopropane) bridged by copper complexes. Interestingly, extended POTas 1 and 3 can undergo single-crystal to single-crystal structural transformations triggered by water.

Increasing structure dimensionality of copper(I) complexes by varying the flexible thioether ligand geometry and counteranions

This work focuses on the systematic investigation of the influences of pyrimidine-based thioether ligand geometries and counteranions on the overall molecular architectures. A N-containing heterocyclic dithioether ligand 2,6-bis-(2-pyrimidinesulfanylmethyl)pyridine (L1) and three structurally related isomeric bis(2-pyrimidinesulfanylmethyl)-benzene (L2-L4) ligands have been prepared. On the basis of the self-assembly of CuX (X = I, Br, Cl, SCN, or CN) and the four structurally related flexible dithioether ligands, we have synthesized and characterized 10 new metal-organic entities, Cu 4(L1)2I4 1, Cu4(L1) 2Br4 2, [Cu2(L2)2I 2¡¤CH3CN]n 3, [Cu(L3)I]n 4, [Cu(L3)Br]n 5, [Cu(L3)CN]n 6, [Cu(L4)CN]n 7, [Cu2(L4)I2]n 8, [Cu2(L4)(SCN) 2]n 9, and {[Cu6I5(L4) 3](BF4)¡¤H2O}n 10, by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that the 10 Cu(I) complexes possess an increasing dimensionality from 0D (1 and 2) to 1D (3-5) to 2D (6-9) to 3D (10), which indicates that the ligand geometry takes an essential role in the framework formation of the Cu(I) complexes. The influence of counteranions and pi-pi weak interactions on the formation and dimensionality of these coordination polymers has also been explored. In addition, the photoluminescence properties of Cu(I) coordination polymers 4-10 in the solid state have been studied.

Heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes with aromatic diimines and phosphines: Synthesis, structure, photophysical properties and THz time domain spectroscopy

Nine novel copper(I) complexes with diphosphine and diimine ligands, namely [Cu(dpq)(xantphos)]BF4 (1), [Cu(dpq)(xantphos)]I (2), [Cu(dpq)(dppp)]BF4 (3), [Cu(dppz)(dppp)]BF4 (4), [Cu(dppz)(dppp)]I (5), [Cu(dppz)(pop)]I (6), [Cu(dpq)(pop)]I (7), [Cu(dpq)(pop)]Br (8), [Cu(dpq)(pop)]SCN (9) (dpq = pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline, dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2?,3?-c]phenazine, xantphos = 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)xanthene, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, pop = 1,1?-[(Oxydi-2,1-phenylene)]bis[1,1-diphenylphosphine]), were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, fluorescence spectra and terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). These nine complexes were synthesized by the reactions of copper salts, diimine ligands and various of P-donor ligands through one-pot method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that complex 9 is of a simple mono-nuclear structure while complexes 6 and 7 are of dimer structures. For complex 8, hydrogen bonds and C?H?pi interactions lead to the formation of a 1D infinite chain structure. Interestingly, complexes 1?5 show novel 2D or 3D network structures through C?H?pi interactions. In addition, complexes 1?3 and 6?9 exhibit interesting fluorescence in the solid state at room temperature. Among the nine complexes, complex 1 shows the highest quantum yield up to 37% and the lifetime of 1 is 6.0 mus. The terahertz (THz) time-domain spectra of these complexes were also studied.

New copper(I) complexes bearing lomefloxacin motif: Spectroscopic properties, in vitro cytotoxicity and interactions with DNA and human serum albumin

In this paper we present lomefloxacin’s (HLm, 2nd generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic agent) organic and inorganic derivatives: aminomethyl(diphenyl)phosphine (PLm), its oxide as well as new copper(I) iodide or copper(I) thiocyanate complexes with PLm and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmp) or 2,2?-biquinoline (bq) as the auxiliary ligands. The synthesized compounds were fully characterised by NMR, UV?Vis and luminescence spectroscopies. Selected structures were analysed by theoretical DFT (density functional theory) methods. High stability of the complexes in aqueous solutions in the presence of atmosferic oxygen was proven. Cytotoxic activity of all compounds was tested towards three cancer cell lines (CT26 – mouse colon carcinoma, A549 – human lung adenocarcinoma, and MCF7 – human breast adenocarcinoma). All complexes are characterised by cytotoxic activity higher than the activity of the parent drug and its organic derivatives as well as cisplatin. Studied derivatives as well as parent drug do not intercalate to DNA, except Cu(I) complexes with bq ligand. All studied complexes caused single-stranded cleavage of the sugar?phosphate backbone of plasmid DNA. The addition of H2O2 caused distinct changes in the plasmid structure and led to single- and/or double-strain plasmid cleavage. Studied compounds interact with human serum albumin without affecting its secondary structure.

Effect of metal oxidation state on FRET: A Cu(i) silent but selectively Cu(ii) responsive fluorescent reporter and its bioimaging applications

Copper(ii) and copper(i) complexes of a newly designed and crystallographically characterized Schiff base (HL) derived from rhodamine hydrazide and cinnamaldehyde were isolated in pure form formulated as [Cu(L)(NO3)] (L-Cu) (1) and [Cu(HL)(CH3CN)(H2O)]ClO4 (HL-Cu) (2), and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic tools. Interestingly, complex 1 but not 2 offers red fluorescence in solution state, and eventually HL behaves as a Cu(ii) ions selective FRET based fluorosensor in HEPES buffer (1 mM, acetonitrile-water: 1/5, v/v) at 25 C at biological pH with almost no interference of other competitive ions. The dependency of the FRET process on the +2 oxidation state of copper has been nicely supported by exhaustive experimental studies comprising electronic, fluorimetric, NMR titration, and theoretical calculations. The sensing ability of HL has been evaluated by the LOD value towards Cu(ii) ions (83.7 nM) and short responsive time (5-10 s). Even the discrimination of copper(i) and copper(ii) has also been done using only UV-Vis spectroscopic study. The efficacy of this bio-friendly probe has been determined by employing HL to detect the intercellular distribution of Cu(ii) ions in HeLa cells by developing image under fluorescence microscope.
